Take Vitamins to Heart

Much attention is focused on breast cancer prevention in women — and rightly so. Yet we often forget that the number one killer of women in America is heart disease.

Exercise and a healthy diet are key to a heart-healthy lifestyle. New studies are suggesting women may want to consider adding multivitamins to their fight against heart disease.

A study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed women with no history of heart disease who took multivitamins had a 27 percent lower risk of heart attack. Meanwhile, women who took multivitamins with other supplements had a 30 percent lower risk.

A separate Dutch study found multivitamin use lowered the incidence of heart attack by 51 percent. Yet another American study found the combined use of multivitamins along with supplements of vitamin A, C or E was associated with 25 percent lower risk of death from heart disease.

The association between multivitamins and fewer heart attacks was even stronger in women who took multivitamins for more than five years.

So what’s behind the decreased risk of heart attack? Researchers credit the potentially protective effects of the antioxidant vitamins C and E, along with B vitamins and minerals.

Women AND Men Benefit From Heart-Healthy Nutrients
Whether you’re a man or woman, antioxidants improve the elasticity and overall health of arteries, according to research published in Nutrition and Metabolism. Researchers found that daily supplements of vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and selenium significantly improved the elasticity of arteries. These antioxidants also improved levels of HDL (good) cholesterol in people with multiple heart disease risk factors. Antioxidants not only protect against cell damage, they also may repair damage.
