A simple one-syllable word can do a lot of damage to your body and your mood. Stress.

Stress seems to be epidemic today. Many factors can feed it: world events, financial worries, job insecurity, family illnesses, work overload, children, traffic or just simply life’s daily issues.

These stressors can worsen high blood pressure and cholesterol levels; increase back pain, headaches and stomachaches; aggravate allergies; suppress the immune system; cause sleep problems and fatigue; impair mental judgment and memory; and make you cranky, nervous, sad and depressed. Long-term, stress can age your body and leave you more vulnerable to life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.

But you can fight back and send stress packing. Try these 10 tips to better manage your stress and find happier, calmer days ahead.

  1. Practice positive self-talk. When negative thoughts creep in your mind, turn them around to be more positive. Think: “I can handle this.” Or “One step at a time.” Or “Some day I’ll laugh about this.”
  2. Just breathe. In a stressful situation, stop and take several deep breaths before speaking or reacting.
  3. Walk it off quietly. Take a daily walk in a quiet place rather than a noisy, busy sidewalk if possible. Nature walks are even better.
  4. Seek happiness. Make a conscious effort to hug loved ones frequently, smile at people more and appreciate beautiful scenes in nature whenever possible. 

  5. One ball at a time. Chronic multi-tasking is a direct pathway to stress. Do one thing at a time and just focus on that. Don’t try to balance your checkbook, make dinner and help your child with homework all at the same time. Nothing is done well that way anyhow.
  6. Treat yourself. When stress strikes, take a break and do something you enjoy such as reading, calling a friend, listening to music, or just watching a favorite movie. Try to do at least one enjoyable thing every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Taking time just for you is important self-care. It’s OK to do nothing once in a while.
  7. Get moving. If a vigorous run or heart-pumping kickboxing is more your style, go for it. Any form of exercise helps relieve stress. It eliminates the stress hormones coursing through your body and combats anxiety. Or focus on daily relaxation in the form of deep breathing, yoga, tai chi or meditation. 

  8. Hush-a-bye. Make sure you’re getting adequate sleep — seven to eight hours is ideal — every night. Being rested helps you better handle anything life throws your way and prevents irritability and overreactions.

ADHD: It’s the food, Stupid…

Over 5 million children ages four to 17 have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the United States, and close to 3 million of those children take medication for their symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control. But a new study reported in The Lancet last month found that with a restricted diet alone, many children experienced a significant reduction in symptoms. The study’s lead author, Dr. Lidy Pelsser of the ADHD Research Center in the Netherlands, said in an interview with NPR, “The teachers thought it was so strange that the diet would change the behavior of the child as thoroughly as they saw it. It was a miracle, the teachers said.”

Dr. Pessler’s study is the first to conclusively say that diet is implicated in ADHD. In the NPR interview, Dr. Pessler did not mince words, “Food is the main cause of ADHD,” she said adding, “After the diet, they were just normal children with normal behavior. They were no longer more easily distracted, they were no more forgetful, there were no more temper-tantrums.” The study found that in 64 percent of children with ADHD, the symptoms were caused by food. “It’s a hypersensitivity reaction to food,” Pessler said.

This is good news for parents and children who would like to avoid many of the adverse side effects associated with common stimulant drugs, like Ritalin, used to treat ADHD — and bad news for the pharmaceutical industry. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that common side effects from the drugs are sleeplessness (for which a doctor might also prescribe sleeping pills), headaches, stomachaches, decreased appetite, and a long list of much more frightening (yet rarer) side effects, including feeling helpless, hopeless, or worthless, and new or worsening depression. But Pessler’s study indicates that up to two-thirds — or 2 of the 3 million children currently medicated for ADHD — may not need medication at all. “With all children, we should start with diet research,” Pessler said.

There are also questions about the long-term effects of stimulant drugs and growth in children. After three years on Ritalin, children were about an inch shorter and 4.4 pounds lighter than their peers, according to a major study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 2007. A 2010 study in the Journal of Pediatrics disputed these findings, but all the study’s authors had relationships with drug companies, some of which make stimulants. According to Reuters, “The lead author, Harvard University’s Dr. Joseph Biederman, was once called out by Iowa Senator Charles E. Grassley for the consulting fees he has received from such drug makers.”

This is just one example of how the powerful billion-dollar drug industry designs and interprets studies to suit their interests. Since the 1970s, researchers not tied to drug companies have been drawing connections between foods, food additives, and the symptoms associated with ADHD but many have been dismissed or overlooked by conventional medicine. One of the earliest researchers in this field was Dr. Benjamin Feingold who created a specific diet to address behavioral and developmental problems in children. The Feingold diet, as it is now called, recommends removing all food additives, dyes, and preservatives commonly found in the majority of industrial foods.

There are a multitude of credible scientific studies to indicate that diet plays a large role in the development of ADHD. One study found that the depletion of zinc and copper in children was more prevalent in children with ADHD. Another study found that one particular dye acts as a “central excitatory agent able to induce hyperkinetic behavior.” And yet another study suggests that the combination of various common food additives appears to have a neurotoxic effect — pointing to the important fact that while low levels of individual food additives may be regarded as safe for human consumption, we must also consider the combined effects of the vast array of food additives that are now prevalent in our food supply.

In Pessler’s study the children were placed on a restricted diet consisting of water, rice, turkey, lamb, lettuce, carrots, pears, and other hypoallergenic foods — in other words, real, whole foods. This means that by default the diet contained very few, if any, food additives.

As I see it, there are two factors at work in this study: One being the allergic reaction to the actual foods themselves and the second being a possible reaction to food additives, or combinations of food additives, found in industrial foods. Both certainly could be at play in the results of this study, although the discussion of Dr. Pessler’s study thus far hasn’t addressed the latter issue.

One theme in the discussion of the story has been skepticism from mainstream media — the recent Los Angeles Times article (the only major daily newspaper to cover the study) was very skeptical, if not dismissive. The author writes, “Previous studies have found similar effects, but, like this one, they all had fundamental problems that made it easy for doctors to dismiss them.” NPR interviewer Guy Raz asked a question invoking this tone as well, “Now, you’re not saying that some children with ADHD should not be given medication, right?” Pessler does say that there are some children and adults who might benefit from pharmaceuticals but her research indicates that far too many are being medicated unnecessarily — and this is the crux of the story.

The Los Angeles Times article ends on this note: “‘To be sure, the prospect of treating ADHD with diet instead of drugs would appeal to many parents,’ Dr. Jaswinder Ghuman, a child psychiatrist who treats ADHD says. But parents who want to give it a try should be sure to consult their child’s physician first, she warned: ‘It’s not that simple to do appropriately.'”

Call me old-fashioned, but changing your child’s diet seems a lot “simpler” than altering his or her brain chemistry with a daily dose of pharmaceuticals. It does takes patience, trial and error, and commitment to complete an elimination diet — taking a pill to target symptoms certainly requires less effort on the part of the doctors, family, and child. No one is denying that ADHD is a complicated web of symptoms with potentially many contributing factors. But why not start by examining the most basic and fundamental cornerstone of our health — the foods (and non-foods) we put into our bodies?

Good Nutrition Helps Fight Acne

Can Good Nutrition Fight Acne?

While Disney stars seem immune, millions of frustrated teenagers — and some adults — try to battle acne with special cleansers, toners and creams. Some products make a dent in the facial pimples while others just leave a dent in the wallet. Meanwhile, acne can leave scarring and clobbers self-esteem. Could nutrition make a difference?

At one point, people pointed at French fries, pizza and chocolate as the acne instigators. Then the pendulum swung and dermatologists dismissed food’s role in acne. But in the last 10 years, doctors began looking a little more closely at the link between diet, nutrition and acne. And they’ve discovered compelling evidence that there is an association.

From the Inside Out

According to Georgiana Donadio, PhD, DC, MSc, program director at the National Institute of Whole Health, “Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going on inside your body, and all skin conditions, from psoriasis to aging, are the manifestations of your body’s internal needs, including its nutritional needs.”

Good nutrition may not cure acne, but science shows it certainly could lessen or worsen its severity. For example, high-glycemic (high-carbohydrate) diets may worsen acne, according to an article in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology from July 2010. At the same time, low-glycemic diets can impact hormonal levels and improve acne.

Illustrating the effect of too many carbohydrates, scientists found people living in non-Western societies (those living off the coast of Papua New Guinea and the Aché hunter-gathers of Paraguay) are essentially acne-free. Not coincidently, they have low-glycemic diets consisting mainly of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Another study found a tie between high-glycemic index foods and acne that lasted longer, compared to trials that linked low-glycemic index diets with reduced acne risk.

So limiting processed, high-carb foods — unfortunately the staple of many teenage diets — is an important step in controlling acne. But science shows other nutrients may help improve acne too.

Acne-Fighting Nutrients

Vitamin A and E
Patients with acne often have low levels of vitamin A and E. In a study conducted by Jordan University of Science and Technology, patients with acne taking vitamin A and E improved their acne condition. Vitamin A reduces oil production while it helps maintain and repair skin tissue. Meanwhile, vitamin E helps with the absorption of vitamin A and speeds up the skin healing process.

Vitamin C
This antioxidant has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps the skin heal. As a bioflavonoid, vitamin C also has an antibacterial effect.

Vitamin B Complex
Acne can be a symptom of deficiency in many of the B vitamins. The B vitamins, including B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folic acid) and B12 (cobalamin), are part of many important body functions including skin health. In addition, B vitamins are stress relievers — and stress can be a major player in triggering acne.

Chromium
Chromium helps reduce skin infections and can fight acne. Diets high in sugars (see above about high-glycemic diets) cause a loss of chromium so your body may be deficient.

Zinc
Sometimes acne is a symptom of a zinc deficiency. Studies show an association between a low zinc diet and the worsening or onset of acne. Zinc regulates acne-causing oil production and may help reduce the number of pimples erupting — and help heal pimples faster. Zinc is a tissue healer and fortifies skin to prevent scarring from acne.

Omega 3
Another root of skin problems may be the imbalance between the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. Our Western diets are usually high in omega-6 thanks to our overconsumption of baked goods, cooking oils and other foods, while omega-3s found in fish are often lacking. This imbalance causes inflammation and the skin produces a more irritating form of oil, which can trigger acne. Whiteheads and blackheads are a common symptom of an omega-3 deficiency.
