Nectarines: A Smart Summer Snack

Nectarines: A Smart Summer Snack
The nectarine is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) fruit of the month in July. Include nectarines on your dinner table and in your lunch bag this month. They’re a great source of nutrients necessary for optimal health!

  • Vitamin A. This retinoid plays a key role in cellular growth and vision.
  • Vitamin C. This antioxidant is necessary for the formation of collagen in bones, cartilage, muscles and blood vessels. It also has been shown to prevent or reduce the duration of the common cold.
  • Fiber. According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, dietary fiber promotes longevity by decreasing risk of cardiovascular, infectious and respiratory diseases. Fiber’s widespread benefits also include aiding digestion and promoting weight loss.
  • Niacin. This B vitamin helps convert carbohydrates into usable energy and plays an important role in the nervous system, digestive system. It also promotes skin, hair and eye health. Many studies show niacin may even increase HDL (good) cholesterol.

Tips for adding to nectarines to your day:

  • Shake-up breakfast. Add a cup of sliced nectarines and a cup of ice to your morning Reliv shake and blend. For a filling meal replacement, add a scoop of Slimplicity.
  • Snack on the go. Grab a nectarine and a handful of Relivables Soy Nuts for a quick bite with plenty of fiber and protein.
  • Save for later. To enjoy this summer fruit throughout the year, arrange whole or sliced nectarines on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer. Once frozen, store the nectarines in a plastic bag. When you’re ready to eat, run the nectarine under cold water to remove the skin. Prepare frozen nectarines as usual.

National Men’s Health Week – A Silent Health Care Crisis

National Men’s Health Week Shines Spotlight
On “Silent Health Crisis” in America

Reliv International hopes awareness campaign and Father’s Day
will inspire men to adopt a healthier lifestyle

Clermont, FL., May 24, 2011 Each year, the week leading up to Father’s Day is designated “National Men’s Health Week.” As part of this year’s observance, from June 13-19, Dr. Carl Hastings, Reliv International’s chief scientific officer, suggests that men embrace the message of this annual awareness campaign and give their families a special Father’s Day gift: adopting a healthier, more proactive attitude toward their health.

“There is no better way to show your love and concern for your family and friends,” says Dr. Hastings, “than by taking action now to help stop preventable diseases from developing and taking steps to keep your body and mind in peak condition.”

National Men’s Health Week began in 1994, when the Men’s Health Network (MHN), a non-profit organization, worked with members of the U.S. Congress to create a week that would raise awareness about preventable health problems in men and boys and encourage them to schedule regular health checkups and seek early treatment for disease and injury.

The statistics surrounding men’s health issues are sobering: Dr. David Gremillion of the MHN says, “There is a silent health crisis in America…it’s that fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women.” According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), men die at higher rates of the top 10 causes of death, including heart disease, cancer and stroke, and have an average life expectancy at birth of only 75.3 years as opposed to a woman’s 80.4 years. And yet, men are half as likely as women to visit their doctor annually for a check-up or preventive services.

The good news, according to Dr. Hastings, is that there are steps men can take to ramp up their healthy defenses. For example:

  • Regular check-ups and age-appropriate screening tests are the first defense against preventable illness and disease. The Men’s Health Network provides its “Men’s Health Checklist” health maintenance schedule at
  •  Plenty of exercise and a diet low in saturated fat, combined with an optional supplementation program with plant-based compounds known as phytosterols, can help control high cholesterol, a leading cause of heart disease.
  •  While genetic factors also play a key role, a diet high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains, combined with an optional supplementation program that includes Vitamin E and selenium, may provide protection against one of the most common cancers to inflict American men, prostate cancer.
  •   Maintaining a healthy weight and adding certain plant-based substances, such as cinnamon, to the diet can help control blood sugar levels and lessen the chances of developing diabetes.
  • Controlling chronic stress can reduce the risk of obesity and heart disease and can help avoid behaviors that may affect cancer risk.

“Small but significant changes in lifestyle and health care habits can make a profound difference in life expectancy and overall physical and mental health,” said Dr. Hastings. “And a guided program of nutritional supplementation can also help. Father’s Day is a good time for a man to look around at the faces of the people who love and depend on him, and to make the decision to honor that love and responsibility by making positive changes to his diet and living habits.”

Consistent Exercise Protects Your Colon — and Your Life

Consistent Exercise Protects Your Colon — and Your Life

Just in time to help you renew your commitment to getting more active this year, new studies underscore the benefits of regular exercise — especially related to colon cancer.

According to researchers at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, consistent exercise can lower the risk of dying from colon cancer. In the study, people who exercised consistently for at least 10 years had the lowest risk of colon cancer death.

The same researchers had previously analyzed data from past studies on colon cancer risk and found people who exercised the most were 24 percent less likely to develop colon cancer in the first place than those who exercised the least.

And even after a cancer diagnosis, exercise reduces the risk of recurrence and death.

It’s Never Too Late to Get Moving

The new study’s message: It’s never too late to get started exercising but it’s never too early either. Just a 30-minute walk a day — although longer is even better — helps reduce your risk of many diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and other cancers. Research also shows regular exercise helps you feel better physically and mentally so you function better on a daily basis.

Indulge in a Sleep Chaser

For a well-earned chaser to your exercise, make sure you get a good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep can cancel out exercise’s cancer prevention benefits, according to a study by the National Cancer Institute.

To shore up your digestive health, make sure you’re also eating enough fiber each day. With 10 grams of fiber per serving and a powerful package of vitamins, antioxidants and herbs, Reliv’s FibRestore® is a great start.

Going Green with Your Health!

Four Golden Rules for Greener Health
Living green means we recycle, create less waste and use fewer resources. These are all important ways to protect the environment. But what are you doing to green up your health? A healthy environment and a healthy lifestyle go hand in hand. Let’s make every day “Green Health Day!”

  1. Don’t pollute your body.Is your body a nutritional wasteland? Give a hoot — don’t pollute your body with garbage foods. Instead, treat it well by eating more natural foods that are packed with nutrients. Think fiber-filled whole grains and fruits and vegetables. Meanwhile, reduce saturated fats and sodium intake. You can also prevent erosion of your health with nutritional supplements.Green Health Action Steps:
  2. Reduce waist. How deepis your footprint? Being overweight contributes to type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke, certain types of cancer and more. If you’re a man with a waist measurement of 40 inches or more, or a woman with a waist measurement of 35 inches or more, you’re at much higher risk of metabolic syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. So it pays to reduce your waist! Losing just 5 to 7 percent of your body weightand doing moderate-intensity exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week also may prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.Green Health Action Step:
    • Choose a weight loss partner wisely. Reliv’s Slimplicity® Weight Loss System starts with a calorie-controlled, satisfying shake for lunch combined with accelerator capsules before each meal that help boost your metabolism, burn more fat and control your appetite. The plan includes a pedometer to encourage walking, a food and exercise journal and ongoing support so you can stay on track as you lose weight — and keep it off.
  3. Use more natural energy.Forget oil — we’re talking leg power! Walk or ride a bike whenever possible. Use your leg power to go to the grocery store. If you’re buying a lot, consider pulling a wagon to the store for the walk home. It’s a great muscle and cardio workout to improve heart health and burn more calories! Or bring the family on bikes and everyone can carry a (cloth) bag home. Another idea is to ride your bike to work and arrive invigorated for the day. Re-cycle day after day! With gas prices climbing steeply, these strategies are good for your body and your wallet. Green Health Action Step:
    • Join the Team Reliv Fitness Club. It includes exercise and weight loss tracking, along with peer support and monthly prizes to get you moving and healthy!
  4. Live toxic-free.Stress is toxic. It takes a toll on you mentally and physically and makes you more likely to eat on the run and exercise less. The aftermath is an increase in illness, fatigue and brain fog. Follow the mantra: live, laugh and love. Laughing is a known stress reliever that allows you to live and love more freely! Take some time to enjoy nature too. By taking care of yourself with good nutrition and exercise, you’re better able to handle stress and you create a positive, energetic outlook that ripples to others.Green Health Action Step:
    • Drink responsibly. 24K™ from Reliv is a ready-to-drink energy shot that addresses stress, fatigue and mental fog. With 24 healthy ingredients, 24K delivers real energy through real nutrition. It’s a truly sustainable energy source!
